Love to Give

3/27/2023

I’ve got a lot of love to give,

And I do.

Some days, the spring is overflowing

And my love sprinkles down to the feet

Of every being passing by:

A neighbor, the birds, my sister and yours

Cannot evade its gentle care and tenderness.

It spills over onto my own collar,

And I place a hand over my heart to hold it steady.

I’ve got a lot of love to give

And at times when it is only just enough

It swirls readily within my weighty chest.

It empties out of my mouth and into my hands

And I pour it back through the top of my head

Once more

Then again

Until one of your souls comes near to mine

And I reach for your hand to pass it through.

I’ve got a lot of love,

But in the seasons when the well runs low,

I ask if I may borrow a cup of yours.

I’ll give it back once it rises again to the brim

Like we always do.

I’ve given a lot of my love to the world,

Only to learn how its volume multiplies

If I feed first my own mouth.

I have a lot of love for myself

And it mirrors back to me the parts I love most

In every one of you.

To hold myself is to hold you.

Freeing myself is freeing you,

And simply knowing you

Has freed me too.

I’ve got a lot of love to give,

And I always do.
